Assignments

I wish I could teach the Accounting concepts to the students without giving any assignments. Unfortunately, that is not possible, especially with the kind of subject that I teach. Large part of the Accountancy subject deals with numerical problems. These numerical problems can be learnt only by “doing”. After grasping the concepts, the students must practice on their own to deepen their knowledge. I do not find joy merely in giving assignments. I do not believe in giving too much of homework just to keep the students busy. That would mean a torture to the students.

Assignments are given not just to be submitted within the deadline and to impress the teacher. But the core reason of giving assignments is to make self-assessment by the students themselves on how much they have learnt. Students should use assignments as a tool to measure their learning. Assignments give self-realization about one’s own weakness or the areas to be improved. So, let’s use assignment as a tool to improve our learning process.

Since I avoid giving unnecessary homework to the students, the minimum assignments which students are expected to complete must be taken seriously. Hence, I have come up with the following rules for the betterment of my dear students.

Assignment Rules

  1. I always welcome open discussion about the teaching-learning process from the students. If the students feel the teacher is giving too much assignment, the students have the right to express their feeling.

  2. Assignment must be completed within due date. Completion of assignment does not mean the students must solve “all” the problems. If there are problems which the students are unable to solve, they can skip that problem and ask about that problem in the class.

  3. The students are always encouraged to ask for help if there is any confusion in solving the problems. It would be a matter of great regret if any student fails to express their problem.

  4. Students' parents/guardians will be called to meet the teacher, if the students fail to complete the assignments. The parents/guardians will be called if the students get:

  • 5 C's i.e. Incomplete work 5 times

  • 3 D's i.e. Assignments not done at all for 3 times

  • 7 E's i.e. absent for 7 days
